How To Sustainably Dispose Of Flammable Solids

How To Sustainably Dispose Of Flammable Solids

When flammable solid waste is generated, it may end up in landfills or incinerated. While these methods dispose of your industrial waste, they can also lead to air and soil pollution.

However, you have another option that treats waste and turns it into reusable products that are then sold back into industry. This disposal option also helps take your company’s sustainability initiatives to new levels.

Solids Fuel Blending

Fuel blending is the process of combining hazardous waste materials, such as flammable solids, with other fuels to createflammable solids an alternative fuel source that can be used in industrial cement kilns. This approach reduces the reliance on traditional fossil fuels while safely disposing of hazardous waste through energy recovery.

At Samex Environmental’s state-of-the-art recycling facility, combustible solids are received in drums, cubic yard boxes and roll-off bins. These organic solids can be converted to an alternative fuel.

After weighing the containers and applying the barcode for tracking in the receiving area, the containers head to the shredding area where they are inspected for items that aren’t compatible with the process, including pieces of metal that can damage the shredder.

When items go through the conveyor, they are exposed to powerful magnets that remove any metals that weren’t previously detected. Any fine powders in the substance are removed as well. Waste goes through the shredder directly into a roll off bin, which is then transported to a local cement kiln.

At a cement kiln, flammable solids are burned at extremely high temperatures, allowing them to serve as an alternative fuel source while safely neutralizing hazardous components. This process not only disposes of waste but also supports the kiln’s energy needs, reducing dependence on conventional fuels.

Parameters for Flammable Solids

Flammable solids that are eligible for this sustainable waste solution include:

  • Organic solids >5000 BTU
  • Shreddable, without metal or ceramic pieces
  • No biohazardous, explosives, fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides

Typical solids that can go through the fuel blending process include wipes, cardboard, discontinued or expired products, personal protection equipment (PPE) and other debris.

How Fuel Blending Improves Sustainability

Fuel blending not only provides a compliant disposal method for hazardous flammable solids but also creates an environmentally-friendly alternative fuel that supports industrial energy needs.

By converting waste into energy, companies reduce the volume of waste destined for landfills, lower their reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to a circular economy.

Using fuel blending for flammable solids can help a company align its sustainability goals with minimizing waste, reducing greenhouse gasses and repurposing materials that would otherwise contribute to pollution.

Through fuel blending, businesses can not only meet regulatory compliance but actively reduce their environmental footprint by taking advantage of a ZERO WASTE approach to waste management.
