The goal of the ZERO LANDFILL philosophy aims to completely eliminate solid waste from landfill sites; And although the norm or rule to designate these processes is currently in process, there are already regulatory standards that will determine the rules of these standards.
Organizations like UL Environment with its UL2799 standard establish metrics, methods and rules to verify companies and industries that can be summarized in these 3 criteria:
- Zero Waste to Landfill: Products, facilities and / or organizations that have achieved 100% reuse and do not send anything to the landfill.
- Virtually Zero Waste to Landfill: This classification is for those who have managed to revert 98% or more of their waste, thanks to recycling and reuse.
- Landfill Waste Diversion: This classification is for those who have managed to revert 80% or more of their waste, thanks to recycling and reuse.
